A Girl Like Me: Who Creates Our Standard of Beauty

In the film "A Girl Like Me" and in the novel, Coffee Will Make You Black, standards of beauty are examined through the lens of race.  Both authors are making the argument that our standards of beauty are shaped by the racist system that we live in.  How do both author's make this argument?  What evidence can you find in the text?  Are women today, from your generation, still trying to meet a standard of beauty that is white?  If not, whose standard are they trying to live up to?

  1. Today I realize that a lot of women are trying to live up to some form of beauty and I believe that form of beauty is definitely lighter skin and a skinny body. I not only see it in women around me, but also women on the media. I see that the women who do have this form of body and skin color are advertised more than any other type of body.

  2. Well Jose i think that you really don't see the point in the beauty. What about the women that live across the world?
There not beautiful to you just because there not light skinned or the thin kind of women?
Beauty is seen differently all over the world.

  5. Yes women today are trying to meet a standard of beauty, because all you see on the media are skinny, and tall women;if it is demonstrated that skinny is the style than all would like to be like that.Although I believe women don't have to be skinny to be beautiful it is their thoughts and ideas the one's that count.

  6. i agree with leilani because alot of people do think lighter skin is better but beauty is not about how light you are or what curves you have. the only reason women feel they have to meet a standard of beauty is because thats what they are told there suppost to do

  7. I FEEL LIKE JOSEPH IS WRONG BECAUSE THE COLORED WOMEN THAT I KNOW ARE MORE INDEPENDENT AND CHOOSE THERE'S OWN STYLE,ANDI AGREE WITH TIRSA BECAUSE BEAUTY IS THOUGHT OF DIFFERENTLY ACROSS THE WORLD

  11. I think that women of color are trying to meet the standard of beauty that is white. Which is tall and very skinny, but in my point of view everyone is beautiful in their own way. To me, the thing that count more is your inner beauty, but the only thing that the media thinks is beautiful is the way you look/the size that you are.

  12. I agree with what Noemi said because i also think that women dont have to be skinny to be beautiful. What counts is their ideas and thoughts.

  13. I believe that women don't have to be light skinned, or white in order to be beautiful, People all around think of beauty differently, and what what counts is on the inside not just the color, and looks.

  14. In my opinion i believe that women are beautiful in their own unique ways.To me beauty means being your self and not just being skinny and white because in other places of our world being skinny and light skinned might be the definition of ugliness.
