#2 (week 8) RACE MATTERS???

In The Color of Water, why does James’ mother refuse to talk about race?  How is this helping or hurting her children?  What do mixed-race children face in today’s world? Is it more excepted?   What would your parents say if you dated outside of your ethnic group?   Refer to a specific part of the text in your response.

  1. I think she refuses to talk about race is because she's ashamed of hers or because she doesnt want them to know about the real world and this might hurt her children because she's depriving them of that knowlege. I think that children with mixed-races might be discriminated against or treated good depending on the races they come from. My parents wouldnt probably care if I dated a girl from a different ethnic group as long as she spoke Spanish or some Spanish.

  2. I agree with daniel because i think she is ashamed of what the truth is and is trying to hide it from her children to protect them. Her kids are confused and dont understand why she is doing things because of her ways of dealing with it.

  3. I agree with Daniel because she probably is ashamed of her actual race and does not want her kids to know

  4. I think that i agree with Daniel too because the girl is probably ashamed of her race and doesn't want her kids to know her real race. She fears that her kids might be discriminated by other students because of their race or skin color.

  5. I agree with Daniel because she maybe is ashamed of her race and might not want anyone to know who she really is I wouldn't want people to know my true race if I was ashamed of it.

  6. James mother refuses to talk about race because she is ashamed of her race and it is affecting her children because they are not learning about the real world. I think the challenge that mixed-kids face is the fact of people thinking they are adopted when they're really not. My parents would not really care if i dated a girl with a different ethnicity

  7. I think James mother refuses to talk about race because she is ashamed of it. This is hurting her children in the way that they are not learning about whats really going on in the world like for example racism and discrimination.Children with mixed-races might experience discrimination against them. Or it might depend on what they are mixed with, for example if they are mixed with white they might be treated different than if they were mixed with black or brown. Honestly I really don't know what my parents would say if I dated someone from a different ethnicity. Hopefully they wont care as long as were happy.

  9. I agree with what Uvaldo said because mixed children may face the obsticle in which people might say that they are adopted when they really aren't. It can affect them by changing their thoughts and feelings about their own race.

  11. James mother refused to talk about her race because she's ashamed of it. I think that's it's definetly not helping her children. They deserve to know where they came from, and also they aren't getting there knowledge to learn from the real world.

  12. I agree with them because James mother was refuses to talk about race and discrimination because she doesnt want them to know about the real world and this might hurt her children.I guess she didn't want them to know who she really is and where she going from.

  15. James mother doesn't talk to her children about where she comes from because she knows she didn't come from a place that treated her fairly. She is just trying to protect her children from this unfair world, but hiding the real world from her children will affect them even more because they face up with discrimination and start asking crazy questions.

  16. I agree with Uvaldo because James mother just keeps hiding the real world from them but if she keeps doing that then their reactions towards discrimination will be even worst. If i was to date a guy that was not my same ethnicity my parents wouldn't mind as long as he's a good guy, and in my opinion i think thats what matters.

  17. I believe that James mother refuses to talk about race with her children because shes not happy with it. Especially because her kids are color kids. Like in chapter 4 it says "She had a casual way of ignoring affronts, slipping past insults to her witness like a seasoned boxer slips punches.(32)" When she gets talked about the way she is or asked she ignores.
This is hurting her children because there being left to questioned why she refuses to talk about her race. Today it seems like the mixed raced kids go through two opressions. Well i think my parents will question but aslong as there a respectful person with sense they won't say anything.

  18. James' mother (Ruth McBride Jordan) refuses to talk about race because she knew that she won't find the help she needed through her people. As she talks about how the Old Testament influenced her family, Ruth stated, "We had no family life" (41). All her family had was people...and very few momments of family love. All her life she fell apart from her own race; therefore, she had to get help from her community. Ruth did all this to improve the lives of her children, even though she felt it was better if they didn't know the truth yet.
This belief was hurting and helping her children at the same time. It hurt her children because of what they experienced, and never got to know the reason why. It helped her children so that they could be curious and open-minded of where & how they lived. If she didn't have this character, maybe this book would have never been published! Anyways, I still believe that there is more acception for mixed-race people. I accept them for who they are, for they have more ways of seeing life. My parents wouldn't mind me dating/marrying someone from a different race, all they mind for is if he has a good character to make a better family. IF I had something to suggest for the person reading this comment, I would recommend that you don't have to mind the race; it's all about character.

  19. I agree with Leslie because children will start coming up with questions about their families' past. You can't withhold the truth forever and not expect your children to come after you and your story. Ruth knew that there was going to be a time when she would have to spill the truth no matter what.

Also, I kind of agree with Juan. Ruth has kept her children out of the concept of the real world. Yet, We have to look at this in another perspective. In a way it is helping her children though. If James didn't step up and want to know about his roots instead of his mother telling him what was happenning, would he ever dare to care? Would he have done anything upon knowing this information?

  20. I believe that James mother refuses to talk about race with her children because she doesn't want her children to be pick on because they are half white. I think mixed kids get to jump between the color line more then anyone else can I'm white no I'm black what are they to make of their race when are views on race are black and white.

  21. I believe that James' mother refuses to talk about race because she doesn't want her children to feel different about being black and white.

  22. I believe that Ruth refuses to talk about race because she doesn't want her kids to feel bizarre about being another race than their mom is.This is hurting her kids and it is demonstrated in Ch10 when James asks his mom were is her family she responds, "They didn't want me to marry on the black side."
"But if you're black already, how can they be mad at you?"(James) Ruth not informing them about their entire race makes them have their own ideas to why she has never talked to them about her own(white/Jewish) family.

  23. I agree with Lesly because if Ruth doesn't begin to talk to her kids about her family no matter how she was treated there going to start making their own conclusions to why they have never been told they had other family members.

  24. -I Think James Mother Refuses To Talk About Race Because She Dosen't Like That's She Half White And Half Black. It's Hurting Them Because They Don't Know Where They Come From And They Also Don't Know Why Thier Mom Looks Diffrent From Them. They Face The Similiar Things That James Experinces In The Book Like For Example When James Is Being Picked On Because He's Black And He's Jewish And That He's In A White School. I Don't Know What They Would Say If I Dated Outside My Ethnic Group To Say The Truth.

  25. -I Agree With Lesly Because It's Similair To My Thoughts And How I See It And When Lesly Says That She's Trying To Proctect Them That's True. Well I See It Like That But She Is Trying To Protect Them But At The Same Time She;s Hiding Or Should I Say Ignoring Or Pushing The Kids Away From Thier History.
