Welcome to our Critical Literacy Blog. Moving beyond the traditional English class, we learn how to use literacy to resist oppression and fight for justice in our communities. To this end, the texts we investigate will always give us insight into how we might work toward this goal.

Running Away
One can argue that chapters 14 & 15 are about how the decisions we make always catch up to us; there is no way of running away from the consequences of our choices, they will always come back to haunt us. How is this true for Chicken Man? For James? and for Rachel/Ruth/Mama? How is it true for you?

I do think that running away from our problems doesn't solve them, but sometimes people feel like running away, not because of their problems but the fact that they don't know what to do about it so they think it is best to not even respond to those problems. For Chicken Man, James, and Rachel it was all the same thing. They all ran from their problems because they didn't know what to do. This doesn't mean that their problems were solved though.

ReplyDeleteI believe that just because you got away with your past once doesn't mean your going to get away with it forever. The three of them ran away from there problems because they weren't capable of standing up to them not because they were scared but because sometimes you just can't go on with things, and face them. Like in Ch 14 when James realizes that his mom has only been strong the last years because she had someone to share her feelings with.As well as James if he continues to commit crimes and is caught by the cops his past will haunt him forever.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jose because not always do people runaway to get out of the problems but they just don't know how to face them.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that running away from your problems solves anything. The decisions you make have consequences and those consequences can affect you later through out life. This is true for Chicken Man,James and Rachel because they all had something to face but they just kind of ignored it. Like in chapter. 14, when james is about to robb a dealer (pg.141), if he continues to robb dealers and people later on in life he will regret it. He might get caught by the cops and he might try to run away. He might escape, but there will be consequences that he will one day face.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Noemi said because it's true if you got away from your past it doesn't mean that your going to get away with it forever. You will one day face it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Dalia beacuse its true everything you do has a cosequence and if you dont deal with it now its going to catch up to you later. Chicken man, james and rachel all had problems that they were to scared to deal with.Sooner or later james is going to get caught up and he is going to regret it.
ReplyDeleteI believe that running away from your problems won't make anything better, but if you don't deal with them they can become even bigger problems. I understand that people feel stressed when they're full of problems and feel like running away, but that won't solve the problem. For Chicken Man, James, and Rachel it was all very similar, they ran away from their problems because they didn't know what to do. Running away from your problems won't solve anythinng and one day or another they will catch up to you.
ReplyDeletei agree with Noemi because people run away with there problems because they don't know how to face them and think they're going to get away but the won't.
ReplyDeletejose is right because for example...in real life people do crimes and get convicted 30 years later for fleeing from their problems
ReplyDeleteThis goes for all of us. People make mistake and them pay for them in the future. Another example was when i fooled around in class and earned all fails on my report card the time it was due. That following month when my mom didnt let me go out, i sat and wondered why?.....it relates Chicken Man, James, Rachel, and mom because they did not take care of buisness in the past and now they suffer in the future.
ReplyDeleteThese people have lived very different, but it goes for every single person to share a piece of that consequence cake. For Chicken Man, we see that he is so laid back. He's that person who sits at the background, the one who doesn't do anything to change either positively or negatively. In chapter 14 Chicken Man is trying to hold back James from doing something wrong when he told James to "Forget it" (149). That is why he died, for his carelessness. In James' case, it is to back off and not do anything to improve a situation, yet to make it worse. Behold, in Chapter 14, he confessess to us that he fell into the fast high life by consuming drugs and liqour. He cheated himself to protect his mom when he faked his grades (142). To Rachel, she felt the need to embark out of her lifestyle to recreate a new life [she was trying to make her future better]. To know the person you loved turned the tables on you because of what that person did would piss you off right? Especially if it is a very long lasting problem! As this happened to her, she might well feel dead in her soul. When she left, the remaining people who mattered in her life (Mameh and Dee-Dee) have perished from her future (155).

Though, it is true for me to make choices and take consequences. When I was younger, I didn't care where I went; as long as I made my work to survive. My mentallity now is to get my stuff together due to the fact that I messed up when young, onto at least make a foundation for my dreams and my future. All the time I wasted in life is haunting me slowly and bitterly. Believe me, you would NOT want my position.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Stacy with the detail of all of them running away from their problems. All the little issues will eat them alive. For Ruth lost the control of the dilema to being a stranger at Suffolk in Chapt. 15 (158). Chicken Man might have realized his error too late as he died in Chapter 14 (152). James just simply lost his way (140).
I also agree with Joseph. Consequences range in damage or reward based on actions though. What he did had a minor negative consequence. Still, for other people, messing around badly can cause even the worse of consequences.

I appreciate that all of you have responded to the blog. However, most of you, with the exception of Nancy, are not making enough specific references to what you read for me to really know what you know about the text. I should not only read a specific reference, but I should also know what you think about what you read. In class, we call this analysis.
ReplyDeleteSo, are some of you trying to "run away" from the text? Remember, in most of your own words, you've claimed that our decisions will always catch up with us.
ReplyDeleteRunning away from our problems just makes them bigger. Ruth hid her past from her children when they were small but as her children grew and grew questions started to arrive. So she had to let her past out again. As for Chicken Man he tells James that he should think twice if he wents to stick around in a corner like himself because Chicken Man sure seemed that he wished he would've chosen another path. Chicken Man was giving heads up to James about hanging around in a corner his whole like because he knew James would regret it later on in his life like he did.
ReplyDeleteI believe that we cant run away fom our problems no matter what we do, they will always come back to us somehow. Like for example in Chicken Man's experience, he got into an argument with a woman and he thought he could "forget about it" but the next day she came back and stabbed him to death.(152) Or in James' experience he got into a fight with one of Herman's friends and he got fired for it.(149) Also in Ruth's experience she thought she could go into a Black Church but she couldn't because she was a Jew in her heart.(158)
ReplyDeletei thing you cant run away from your problems because that just leaves ghost in you closet and it always come back. like when James got fired or when the chicken man got stabbed
