Criminalization or Prevention

Some argue that truancy tickets, a practice used in Los Angeles, which requires that truant or tardy students  pay a fine, do community service, and/or have a court hearing is a useful practice that deters people from coming to school late or cutting school.  Others argue that this is another way that youth are criminalized because many students are fingerprinted when they get their truancy system, and it forces them into the court system.  If they don't pay the fines, they are denied other rights like ability to get a drivers license. 80% of LAUSD students are Title I, meaning their families are below the poverty line. That means truancy tickets are given overwhelmingly to low-income, majority Black and Brown youth whose families are now going to pay money they most certainly do not have at their disposal.  What do you think about truancy tickets?  Do they work?  What would be an alternative solution for getting students to school on time.  REMINDER: Your response should not be a sentence long!

  1. I think truancy tickets are not useful because they don't fix any problems nor make teens come to school earlier. I think away to fix this problem should be having a school bus pick up students at their homes and have them be taken to school. Some student live far and have to walk to school or take the bus. The bus makes so many stops it won't get you where you want to go fast. A bus with a specific destination should pick them up.

  2. i think truancy tickets are often given out too much.My opinion is that the state is money hungry. If a student come truant/tardy to school i think they should be given a hour detention after school.i think they should be given a hour detention after school because if they get a ticket it will b on their permanent record for life.it was one situation wen i was given a ticket on fourth of july last year for riding a bike with no light.the police gave me a ticket for curfew. Most teenagers get away with it because they give the police an alias.

  3. i agree with noemi because truancy tickets dont work they dont make kids come to school any earlier and its not all their fault because we live in a low income area and our familys have to work really hard to get through the day and some kids hav eto walk to school or take the bus and that takes a long time on the other hand if we had a school bus more kid what get to school earlier

  4. I think truancy tickets are a little mayjor for coming to school late. They can cause fatal beatings for the children that gets the ticket. Although they work, they are a sign of criminalization to the black and brown youth. I feel this way because, I dont think the whites or high income families get tickets for their children coming to school late.

  5. I Think That Truancy Tickets Are A Liddo Harsh Espicially For Being Truant Only Once But If It's Like A Often Thing Then They Should Something About It. And When I Mean By They It's The Goverment. Personally I Don't Think They Work Because It Dosent Make Any Kids Come To School Any Earlier. I Think An Alternative Solution For This Situation Is Like If They Miss A Certain Class They Should Stay Afterschool To Makeup That Work Somesort Of Turtoring Or Like An Hour Detention.

  6. I Agree With Tasia When See Says That The State Is Money Hungry Which Means It's Another Way For The State To Get Money Out Of Us And Then Use It For Useless Things.I Also Disagree With Noemi When She Says That We Should Have School Buses To Pick Us Up But What If The Kids Don't Want To Go To School? And To Add On That The State Couldn't Afford To Pay Bus Drivers ETC Why? Because Of The Economy.

  7. I think that truancy tickets are wrong. They just get given so the state could get more money. Sometimes students have to walk to school or walk their little brother or sister to school and then go to school which they would probably already be late. I think they should have a bus that picks them up. Kids are supposed to go to school Alex and finish it

  8. I disagree with Alex Dela-Light. What do you mean " what if kids dont want to go to school" they are supposed to go or else thats where the truancy ticket comes in.

Truancy Tickets are not cool. You know what? They don't help the community at all. It harms our fellow young people. It might determine if you go to school or not. Worst of all, students will just get apathetic about truancy (pronounciation: true-ass'-see) tickets [excuse me for my language] or not go back to school if they're given often. Also, I meant to say true-as$-see tickets because they are TRUE to the A$S of oppresion as you can SEE tickets. So ironic huh? I see that an alternative (it's a cool, funny, and reasonable idea, so listen carefully) TO bringing Students to school on time is...to pick up them up by running to their houses before school starts and run/walk to school with schoolbags rolling intead of being in someone's back. It's like carpooling, yet it doesn't use gas or electricity and people could get healthy easier. It's cool if you don't agree with me, but leave a better suggestion.

  11. Tasia tells great truths, I like when she says "if they get a ticket it will b on their permanent record for life" because it is true. You can pay what you owe, but you never going to get rid of the scar. It's like when you feel abused, the consequence will be that you'll not forget what that person did to you.

I agree with Alex. Students should stay afterschool and make up their work. They will just won't care about school if they keep getting the same consequnce repeatably. I know I don't care much about getting to school on time because I'm used to it now. I also disagree with getting buses to bring students because:(1)some students will get lazy and might not come to school if the bus leaves w/o them, (2)we are in serious economy problems; (3)buses & busdivers cost too much, (4)some buses don't come in time, (5)buses won't be able to carry all students in need of transportation and (6)buses that come to houses are mostly for Special needs students.

  12. I DISAGREE WITH ALEX BECAUSE HOW MANY STUDENTS DO YOU KNOW THAT ACTUALLY COME AFTER SCHOOL AND STAY AN HOUR OF DETENTION. IF WE HAVE A BUS TO PICK THEM UP THE STUDENTS SHOULDN'T HAVE AN EXCUSE WHY THEY ARE LATE.ANOTHER REASON WHY I DISAGREE IS BECAUSE IF STUDENT DON'T SHOW UP BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY ARE ALL-READY LATE THAN THE SCHOOL DOESN'T GET MORE MONEY IF WE ARE EARLY AND WE ARE IN SCHOOL, THAN THE SCHOOL WILL HAVE MONEY TO BE ABLE TO PAY FOR A BUS.

  13. In my opinion I believe truancy tickets are stupid.Truancy tickets just cause us students to complain about them. Some of us come late to school because we dont have a ride or maybe another accident like waking up late.Because of these simple accidents its unfair to recieve a truancy ticket because sometimes their families cant pay it.But sometimes I think that truancy tickets should be given to those that do want to come late to class for nothing!

  14. I believe that the cause for truancy tickets is not about the students knowledge and the district caring about the students education. I think it's mostly from stoping school budgets to cut down, because schools out here in Los Angeles rally need money.
The educational system itself is made for us to fail & to recieve a truant ticket is exactly what that is doing; making it hard for students as well as students families to come up economicly. Maybe school should notstart so early. It should start like at 8:30 that way
they wont really be an excuse for tardys. Or maybe students that actually care are the ones that take the responsibility to catch up with what they've missed during the lesson. But since mostly the students who come tardy are those who disturb class & not care about an education.

  15. I disagree with Lesly, because how will you know if the student does care an not cares. It'll be doing to much and it won't be fair to label a student not caring about school so just because he or she doesnt care about school your going to get a ticket, it doesn't seem fair.

  16. I do not agree with truancy tickets because of the fact that you are finger printed when you get them. I mean sure theres a fine, but when you're finger printed it is as if you are being charged with robbery. I also do not believe that truancy tickets are effective for tardies because if a student knows that they will be fined if they go to school late they might just not go at all to avoid the ticket.

  17. I disagree with everyone and believe that if you're late to school then that's on you. You should not be punished for it.

  18. In my opinion I think truancy tickets are useless. People who get them for being tardy just complain about them. They might get to school late because(1)they have to walk to school and they live far away (2)they have to take the bus so that means that they have to wait for it (3)or even something like you have to take your sibling to his\her school on they way to school. I don't think that its fair for the student or the parents to pay the fines because what if they don't have the money to pay it, or if they are in serious economic problem. What do you then? Youth is being criminalized because the cops are taking their finger prints like if they are some sort of criminals when the only thing they did wrong was come to school late. I don't believe that tickets are the solution for making students be ontime.

  19. I also agree with Alex because its true students who are tardy can come after school to makeup their work. I also disagree with Noemi about that they should have buses to pick us up, but what if the students just plain and simply doesnt want to go to school then that means that us as a school is losing money on the free transportation that no one is riding.

  20. I believe that truancy tickets are very useless. Why would a student come to school late if they know that are going to get a ticket? I think that they should find a way that actually can get students to class ,besides giving them a ticket, like everyone that gets to school early can get free hot choclate or something like that.
